One page per outward code — 3,042 districts in 123 postcode areas — with the places the directories list for it, how many of its postcodes are in use, the streets filed under it and where it sits. Counted from the national postcode directory and OS Open Names installed on this server, most recently on 2026-09-18. Nothing here says who is at an address.

Every area, every district

2,752 of the 3,042 districts carry both a live postcode and a listed street and have a page of their own; the rest are listed here for completeness and render without being indexed. Live postcodes are the codes in use on the day of the count; streets are the roads OS Open Names files under the district, each road under one district even where it runs through several.

Common questions about postcode districts

What is a postcode district?
The outward half of a British postcode — SW1A in SW1A 2AA, RG5 in RG5 3AA — which is the part Royal Mail sorts on before the inward half narrows it to a street or a building. A district holds anything from a handful of postcodes to a few thousand; the area is its leading letters, and the area names on these pages are the post towns they are conventionally known by, not something read from any dataset.
Where do the counts come from?
The live and terminated postcodes are counted from the national postcode directory installed on this server (the ONS Postcode Directory or OS Code-Point Open, both under the Open Government Licence); the places are what OS Open Names lists for the district’s postcodes; the streets are the roads OS Open Names files under the district. Every page names the copies it was counted from and the day it was counted.
Do these pages say who lives at an address?
No. A postcode directory says whether a code is in use, never who is there, and a streets register lists roads, not occupants. Nothing on these pages, or in the address lookup behind them, names a person at an address.
