Postcode districts of Great Britain

One page per outward code — 3,016 districts in 120 postcode areas — with its live and terminated postcodes by sector, the places and roads OS Open Names lists for it and its nearest districts. Counted from the national postcode directory and OS Open Names installed on this server, most recently on 2026-11-02. Nothing here says who is at an address.

Every area, every district

2,755 of the 3,016 districts carry both a live postcode and a listed street and have a page of their own; the rest are listed here for completeness and render without being indexed. Reading a British postcode district page says what each page carries, and Great Britain’s postcodes in numbers adds the directory up by area and by month.

Crown Dependencies

The postcode directory installed here also carries the GY, IM and JE postcode areas. They belong to Crown Dependencies, not to Great Britain, and are not counted above; OS Open Names does not cover them, so their pages count postcodes and sectors but list no roads.

Common questions about postcode districts

What is a postcode district?
The outward half of a British postcode — SW1A in SW1A 2AA, RG5 in RG5 3AA — which is the part Royal Mail sorts on before the inward half narrows it to a street or a building. A district holds anything from a handful of postcodes to a few thousand; the area is its leading letters, and the area names on these pages are the post towns they are conventionally known by, not something read from any dataset.
Where do the counts come from?
The live and terminated postcodes and the sectors are counted from the national postcode directory installed on this server (the ONS Postcode Directory or OS Code-Point Open, both under the Open Government Licence); the places are what OS Open Names lists for the district’s postcodes; the streets are the roads OS Open Names files under the district; where a page counts companies, they are Companies House registered offices added up per district, never an address. Every page names the copies it was counted from.
Do these pages say who lives at an address?
No. A postcode directory says whether a code is in use, never who is there, and a streets register lists roads, not occupants. Nothing on these pages, or in the address lookup behind them, names a person at an address.
