What SPF tells you
SPF (Sender Policy Framework) is a TXT record starting with v=spf1 that lists the servers allowed to send mail on the domain's behalf. Receivers check it on every inbound message; mail from a host the record does not authorize fails SPF and is far more likely to be junked. No SPF record means anyone can send mail claiming to be the domain without failing this check.
What DMARC adds
DMARC sits on top of SPF and DKIM and answers the question those two leave open: what should a receiver do when authentication fails? The policy lives in a TXT record at _dmarc.<domain> and is one of none (monitor only), quarantine (spam-folder failures), or reject (refuse them). Major mailbox providers now require a DMARC record from bulk senders, so its presence has become a baseline of domain hygiene.
Frequently asked questions
What does a DMARC policy of p=none mean?
The domain publishes DMARC for monitoring only: receivers report authentication failures but deliver the mail anyway. It is the usual first step before moving to p=quarantine (send failures to spam) and p=reject (refuse them outright).
Does SPF affect whether a domain can receive email?
No. SPF and DMARC govern sending: they tell receiving servers which hosts may send mail claiming to be from the domain. Receiving is governed by MX records. A domain can receive perfectly while publishing no SPF at all — it just makes the domain easier to spoof.
Why check SPF and DMARC during email verification?
They are a maturity signal. A company domain with SPF and an enforcing DMARC policy is actively maintained; a domain with neither is more often parked, abandoned, or a throwaway — useful context when scoring an address you were given.
