New and upcoming North American area codes
NANPA’s NPA report of 27 September 2026 lists 13 North American area codes put in service in the 24 months before it, the newest 465 (New York) on 18 June 2026. Another 3 are assigned and not yet in service, and relief planning is under way for 12. Each code is joined to the central office code tables for how many of its codes are assigned and in service.
Put in service in the 24 months to 27 September 2026
Three dates, each from its own file. In service since is the day NANPA’s NPA report puts the area code itself into service. The code counts and the first dated code come from the central office code files (NANPA’s for the United States and its territories, the CNAC’s for Canada); NANPA dates codes from 2001 on only. None of them is the day a given number first rang, and every figure is original allocation, not who serves a number today.

An area code can be in service before any of its codes is assigned: 465 has been in service since 18 June 2026, and NANPA’s central office code file of 27 September 2026 lists none of its codes.
A lookup checks a number against the numbering metadata, libphonenumber 9.0.40, before it reads the regulator’s table. That version does not accept numbers in 465, 483, 471, 679, 457, 729, 357, 837, 621 yet, so a lookup of one answers invalid_number until a release adds the code. Where the metadata accepts a code, the regulator’s table answers next: while the copy installed here is current, a number in a code NANPA or the CNAC does not list as assigned answers unassigned_block.
NANPA also put 4 non-geographic codes in service in the same window (532 on 4 November 2024, 538 on 28 October 2025, 542 on 26 May 2026 and 543 on 21 September 2026). They are non-geographic 5XX codes, used across the whole plan and tied to no state or province, so they are not listed as area codes.
Assigned, not yet in service
NANPA has assigned these area codes and they are not in service yet. The dates are NANPA’s plan as of its report of 27 September 2026 and can move. No number can be in service in them yet.

Relief planning under way
NANPA flags an area code while planning for its relief, usually a new overlay code, is under way. The flag is NANPA’s own; its exhaust projections are a separate publication this page does not read.
