# `digit_pattern` (phone): repeated or sequential subscriber digits

The Spaw phone risk signal digit_pattern adds 30 points to risk_score when the last seven digits of the number repeat one digit or run straight up or down, such as 555-5555 or 123-4567 (dataset digit-pattern).

- Weight: +30
- Dataset: `digit-pattern`
- Read from: `e164`
- Default SMS policy: does not block it on its own: +30 is within the default ceiling of 60, which blocks only a score above it.

People type these into forms when they do not want to give a number. The check is arithmetic on the number itself: the last seven digits (six when the number is shorter) are one digit repeated, or each is one more or one less than the one before, wrapping from 9 to 0. The dataset is digit-pattern, and because no data is consulted it never appears in sources.

Real numbers with such digits exist, and some businesses pay for them, which is why the weight is small.

**What it cannot tell you.**

- It is a heuristic about what was typed, not a fact about the line: it cannot tell you whether the number is in service or who holds it.

**What to do.** Ask the person to confirm the number when it fires on a form. On its own it scores 30 and passes the default SMS policy, which blocks a score above 60; beside other signals the score can pass that.

The SMS policy is set per account with `PUT /api/v1/phone/policy` (https://spaw.co/docs/api/update-phone-policy) or the dashboard's SMS policy tab, and its `block_signals` may list any signal, this one included.

An excerpt of an answer carrying this signal alone, with the number and the other fields left out, because no test number answers it. The score and the decision are worked out as the lookup and the default SMS policy work them out.
